Things to Do Near Sinnemahoning, PA

Your Basecamp for the PA Wilds

Everything below is a scenic drive from your door. Drive times are from Sinnemahoning and are approximate.

Year-Round Favorites

Sinnemahoning State Park (about 25–30 minutes north on PA 872). This 1,910-acre park follows the First Fork of Sinnemahoning Creek. Bald eagles, elk, coyotes, and bobcats live here. Start at the Wildlife Center's hands-on exhibits. The flat Lowlands Trail runs about five miles along the creek, and two of those miles are ADA accessible, including the path to an elk viewing platform. At the south end of the park, the George B. Stevenson Dam holds back a 145-acre reservoir.

Bucktail State Park Natural Area / Route 120. Sinnemahoning sits along this 75-mile scenic drive from Emporium through Renovo to Lock Haven. The road follows a steep, wooded valley sometimes called the Bucktail Canyon. Much of the land is private, so enjoy it from the road.

Spring and Summer

Fishing. Stevenson Reservoir holds trout, bass, crappie, perch, and more, with an ADA-accessible pier. Fly anglers like the 2.1-mile delayed-harvest, artificial-lures-only stretch of the First Fork below Bailey Run.

Paddling. The reservoir allows electric motors only, so it stays calm for kayaks, canoes, and paddleboards. When the water is high enough, you can paddle Sinnemahoning Creek from Driftwood (3.7 miles) or on toward Keating (11.8 miles).

Hiking. The orange-blazed Bucktail Path runs about 34 miles from Sizerville State Park and ends right in Sinnemahoning. It passes old-growth hemlocks in the Johnson Run Natural Area. For a half-day hike, the Fred Woods Trail off Mason Hill Road near Driftwood is a 4.5-mile trail past rock formations and two vistas. Stop at the nearby Bucktail Overlook, which is known as the "Top of the World." Wear sturdy shoes and watch for rattlesnakes.

Dark skies. Cherry Springs State Park is about 1¼ hours away and is an International Dark Sky Park. Bring a red flashlight to the public viewing area.

Fall

The elk rut runs from September into October (see The Elk Comeback), and peak color usually arrives in October. Drive Route 120 or head to the Logue Run Vista above the state park, and check DCNR's weekly foliage reports.

Hunting. In the 2026–27 season, archery deer season runs Oct. 3–Nov. 20 and Dec. 26–Jan. 24, and regular firearms deer season runs Nov. 28–Dec. 13. Regular bear firearms season is Nov. 21–24. Sundays inside these date ranges are now open. About 1,400 acres of Sinnemahoning State Park are open to hunting. Always check the Game Commission's rules for your Wildlife Management Unit.

Winter

Sinnemahoning State Park's trails are open for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, and ice fishing is allowed when conditions permit. Elk State Forest has about 100 miles of snowmobile trails, open from the day after the last deer season through April 1, weather permitting. ATVs are allowed only on designated state-forest trails, not on state park land, state game lands, or state forest roads, so check with the forest district before you bring one.

Plan your basecamp. Book Resting Eagle Cabin, which sleeps 24, or view all our homes, including Creekside and the Central Emporium Home, about 30 minutes away in Emporium.
